“Teaching is in my blood. After receiving my BA at UC Santa Barbara, I continued the family tradition at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education, where I earned my teaching credential. After a few years of middle school teaching in Los Angeles, I moved with my young son to San Francisco and was lucky enough to share the McAteer High School campus with my soon to be mentor, Wayne Macdonald, and the Urban Pioneer Program. The best work that I have ever done as a teacher involves allowing students the opportunity to leave the confines of the classroom and experience mental and emotional challenges through outdoor learning activities. I am profoundly fortunate to be part of the exciting experiential education work of the GetOutAndLearn project at Downtown High School. ”

“I enjoy learning as much as teaching. I was born to an immigrant farm worker in Hood River, Oregon. After my mother gave birth to me, we went to Mexico, where I was raised for the first six years of my life. When I arrived in San Francisco, at the age of seven, my mother enrolled me in the San Francisco Unified School District. As a troubled youth, I needed alternative schooling to assist me through my teenage years. The traditional school structure was not working for me, so I attended a wilderness program called Urban Pioneers, which turned out to be the best decision. It changed my life for the better. I was offered a different perspective on how I could live. That program was the reason I went to college. I attended City College of San Francisco and later transferred to San Francisco State University, where I received my B.A. in mathematics. I found that learning math was key to understanding the world. I felt the need to share the importance of math with young people, which is why I pursued teaching. However, learning survival skills and having hands-on experiences impacted me so deeply that it opened my eyes to various possibilities. I want to offer the same opportunities to my students in GetOutAndLearn.“
